Archers and Arrows from Lausanne (Switzerland) is one of those new punk bands melting punk rock with hardcore and 90's emo. They have their roots in bands like Hot Water Music, The Lawrence arms or Latterman. Their first EP received many positive critics: "One of the best Swiss Punk-Rock combos nowadays" or "Das Versprechen einer der besten Schweizer Bands mit Hardcore-Hintergrund zu sein". Their songs are played on Couleur 3 (swiss national radio), were they got an interview. They then played many shows with international bands like The Get Up Kids, Roger Miret (agnostic front), Burning Heads, Polar Bear Club, Dead to me, Man Overboard, Venerea or Civet.

The band started out as an old school hardcore band Low Punch in 1997 but renamed to The Hoax Program after changing musical direction in 2007. SLUDGE/DOOM-METAL. BENEATH OBLIVION deliver thick foggy and oppressive music. There are blunt arrangements that move with difficulty and a trudging pace that gives it a nightmarish effect. It’s all heightened by the vocals - a growler without the cookie, but with a bucketload of acid down his throat. Mostly, the tracks are just massive like NEUROSIS on "through silver in blood", but with a more metallic song structure. The tempos are deliberately unhurried, which heightens the sense of endlessness torment. Unrolled over the span of 75min.

En la semana he tenido la oportunidad de escuchar algo de material nuevo que se me hizo relevante y que poco a poco estaré subiendo a este espacio, algo de lo mas interesante y que no he podido dejar de escuchar una y otra vez, ha sido este disco, que nos lo entrega la banda estadounidense, que desde Tenesee trae una fuerza tremenda y variedad de influencias musicales muy diversas, entretenidas y sobre todo las mezclas entre estas muy bien logradas. De primera mano, a mi me parecieron una mezcla bastante buena entre el post-rock y un metal ambivalente que podría llamar agridulce, obviamente decantando en un post-metal de calidad, hasta ahí la concepción y el desentramado del disco, pero conforme avanzaba, oyendo de principio a fin este trabajo en una noche de tráfico intenso y lluvia en esta ciudad caótica, me daba cuenta que pasaba muy por encima de esta simple clasificación genérica, ya que las atmósferas estaban llenas de pinceladas de detalles referentes a sus no pocas influencias.

"Vestiges formed in January of 2010. Influenced by hardcore, black metal, crust, d-beat, screamo, and post-rock, the band set out to incorporate elements of each genre to articulate their message both musically and lyrically through a series of albums that follow a central narrative about the relationship between man and nature.

On October 10, 2010 the band released their debut full-length album and the first installment of their narrative, The Descent Of Man. The album was independently released by the band on a limited run of hand-numbered double vinyl, compact discs, and cassettes, which has afforded the band the opportunity to tour extensively across the United States and Canada. The Descent Of Man is currently distributed in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia through a number of independent record labels and distros.

The Descent Of Man follows the creation, the evolution, and the eventual annihilation of mankind. Today, we find ourselves hoping to reverse the damage that we have done and struggling to sustain what little earth we have yet to rape repeatedly. We validate this existence with stories that justify our behavior and our role in the natural world. The promise of salvation in a land we have yet to see has clouded our judgment in a land that is right before our eyes. Industrialization, militarization, overpopulation, theism, specieism, and nihilism are regarded as evolution and progress. Our greed and ignorance have been celebrated and our past has been forgotten. We were meant to be a part of nature. We were not meant to conquer nature. We were given life and we have done everything in our power to bring death upon everything in our path, including ourselves. There will be horrifying consequences for what we have done.

On April 22, 2011 the band released VI, the next chapter of their narrative, on an extremely limited compact disc pressing with the plan to release a vinyl-only, remastered version of the song on a split vinyl with Ghaust (Indonesia) through three labels on three continents. The split was released on October 10, 2011, along with a 180gram pressing of The Descent Of Man, in celebration of its first anniversary.

I eventually put on a show for the band and found out they were both great people and live band. Now a Witches CD/LP later, here I am getting to work with Cara Beth Satalino (Witches) and Marco/Salinas together on Cara's 2008 recording. It has been remixed, remastered, and comes to you with new artwork in 12" 45 form pressed on recycled mixed color vinyl. These are songs recorded before Witches, some of which would become band songs. Very stripped down but each song offers different dimensions with subtle changes in instrumentation. Now that both Witches and Cara are active I look forward to seeing what comes next.

It has been 8 years since Wolves in the Throne Room’s much mythologized genesis. Over the course of 3 studio albums and hundreds of live performances the band has slowly boiled away the prima materia of Black Metal to distill a unique essence.

The transmutation reaches a new level with the completion of Celestial Lineage the clans’ new Astral Black Metal document. In contrast to the bleakly hypnotic architecture of 2008’s Black Cascade, Celestial Lineage expands into a more expansive and visionary territory. Although it is obviously inspired by European Black Metal, Wolves in the Throne Room create music that is intensely local in it’s orientation. Certainly, Celestial Lineage is a manifestation of the northwestern landscape, but it also arises out of an underground West Coast tradition formed by successive generations of psychic crusaders: Theosophists, beatniks, the Grateful Dead, Neurosis, the back-to-the-land movement, satanic hippies, tree-spiking anarchist punks. The resulting music invokes a misty dream world. Rain drenched specters looming at the edge of the wood. Echoes from the Astral Plane. Ancient cedar deities robed in moss. A glimpse of a bronze-domed temple among the firs. Celestial Lineage was written and recorded over the course of the first six months of 2011.

The Weaver brothers worked with Producer/mystic Randall Dunn (Earth, Boris, SUNN 0))), Cave Singers, Bjork/Omar Souleyman), with whom the band has developed a close relationship since their first collaboration on 2007’s Two Hunters. 3 songs are bejeweled by Jessika Kenney’s liturgical choir and solo voice. Aaron Turner (ISIS) also contributes orations to the maelstrom.

Big Sexy Noise - Trust The Witch

Jusqu’ici je n’ai guère été charitable avec Lydia Lunch et son groupe Big Sexy Noise. Leur premier album sans titre me semble aujourd’hui toujours aussi bancal, pauvre parfois et sans grand intérêt sur les trois quarts de ses titres. Un vrai pétard mouillé. Le Son Du Maquis a choisi de publier Trust The Witch (« fais confiance à la sorcière »), le tout nouvel album de Big Sexy Noise non sans avoir entretemps réédité, comme il convenait de le faire, 13 13, le chef d’œuvre absolu de Lydia Lunch. L’appréhension refait naturellement surface mais l’envie d’écouter également. Alors allons-y.

Première constatation : le line-up de Big Sexy Noise est toujours le même, à savoir Lydia Lunch au chant et aux textes, James Johnston à la guitare, Terry Edwards à l’orgue et au saxophone ainsi que Ian White à la batterie. Et on pense toujours que les trois musiciens de Gallon Drunk sont bien ce qui peut convenir de mieux comme backing band à Lydia Lunch à l’heure actuelle. Toutes les compositions sont signées Lunch/Johnston – alors que sur le premier album il y avait des reprises pas toujours très heureuses (Lynyrd Skynyrd !) – et, effectivement, le niveau général de Trust The Witch s’en ressent automatiquement, de même qu’un sentiment d’unicité certain. Trust The Witch se révèle rapidement quelque peu supérieur à tout ce que Big Sexy Noise a pu enregistrer jusqu’ici, ce qui n’était pas bien dur au départ, on ne peut donc pas dire cela constitue un exploit.

The Finger Print discography is getting harder to find, so I did some digging. With a little window cleaner my old scratchy copy of the CD made for some good ripping. As far as my personal canon goes, Finger Print were one of the delectable treats that lured me into the rabbit hole of nineties hardcore. Things would never again be the same for me, and I rather like it that way. Claw your way through the tangle of FP's jack-hammering drums, metallic dissonance, winding melodies, and curdling screams, and you'll find four regular guys, hacking their own rambling and fugitive path to the same vague place you hope to one day end up too. Like many acts of the decade, their path went somewhere inward, exploring the place of the individual among the shape-shifting and ghoulish menagerie of the political realm. Whether or not they ever found what they were looking for, I cannot say, but this 19 track document suggests to me that the journey was well worth it. There's nary a single throw-away (other than the awfully recorded live tracks at the end), and unlike many hardcore discographies, I am always riveted by this one from beginning to end. Speaking of the end, the final three studio tracks revealed a slightly new direction for the band, smoothing the jagged metallic edges to more elegant contours. Members would continue in this direction in the band Jasemine, who sadly only released four songs.

A new interview with AMEBIX about "Sonic Mass" can be seen below.

AMEBIX recently released its first new material for almost 24 years. The song is entitled "Knights Of The Black Sun" and was made available on June 3. A limited-edition 12-inch vinyl single was issued on Amebix Records, in conjunction with Profane Existence. The digital download is available through Amebix Records/Easyaction.

An animation version of "Knights Of The Black Sun" can be seen below. The video was created by the team of animator Andy Lefton and director Fin McAteer. Lefton also made a follow-up interview with AMEBIX members Rob Miller and Stig C. Miller to give a little more insight into the epic work that is the band's new album, "Sonic Mass".

"Knights Of The Black Sun" was recorded at The Lodge Studios in Northampton and was engineered and produced by AMEBIX drummer Roy Mayorga (NAUSEA, SOULFLY, STONE SOUR). Singer/bassist Rob Miller (a.k.a. The Baron) described the release in a recent interview as "a coming of age for our music. This whole body of work has been not only about music, but also art. This is going to surprise a lot of people."

Formed in the late Seventies and hailed as the godfathers of crust punk and extreme metal, AMEBIX had long lain dormant until the addition of drummer Roy Mayorga (NAUSEA, CRISIS, SOULFLY, STONE SOUR), a DVD release, and a string of 2009 reunion shows reignited the flame. The band's resurrection first resulted in the release of 2010's "Redux" EP, which features live and re-recorded versions of several of the band's best-loved classics, including "Winter", "Chain Reaction", and the immortal battle cry, "Arise!". The songs were remixed by Mayorga and "Redux" is available from Profane Existence on CD, 12-inch LP and digitally.

Light bearer formed in 2010, from the ashes of UK post metal and hardcore bands [ Fall of Efrafa ] and Dungeons. The band is an all encompassing art/music/narrative project, based around a story written by their vocalist Alex, who drew influence from the writings of Philip Pullman’s ” His dark materials ” trilogy, John Milton’s Paradise Lost, and the Book of Genesis.

The band play a mixture of melodic post hardcore, progressive metal, post rock and ambient atmospheric drone, The songs are structured specifically to follow the narrative and therefore peak and trough in equal measure, mixing screamed desperate vocals with sung passages.

The story is split into four main parts, Lapsus, Silver Tongue, Magisterium and finally Lattermost Sword. The narrative begins with the metaphorical casting out of the protagonist Lucifer, an angel so loyal and in love with god that he could not submit when asked to bow before humanity, personified as Adam.

For this act he is banished from heaven into the cold stigeon wastes below. Here he questions the Allfather – an entity who claimed the universe as his own. In doing so he realises his master has lied, and vows to reach out from his desolate prison and become his namesake –to pass on the torch of free will to all life in the multiple universes.

The story continues in Silver Tongue, Magisterium and Lattermost Sword in which the torch is borne by the metaphorical Eve – the mitochondrial ancestor of humanity, her rejection of the will of the false god and the attempted rebellion against Heaven, her role and the role of the prophesied second Eve. The establishment of the church and the eventual culmination and war against the patriarchal god.

Alongside the four releases are planned EPs and split records, beginning with “Beyond the infinite, the assembly of god” – an elaboration of the introduction to the first album. A second narrative runs through records not included in the four main parts, which deals with the natural formation of the universe and the evolution of life.

This being my first impression of Brainoil, I have to say that I absolutely loved this filthy sludge right from the beginning of “Death of This Dry Season.” The guitar work is phenomenal, straightforward, bluesy, melodic riffing. The drumming is steady and punishing and I am quickly falling in love with this band. I like that the vocals don’t stand out over the rest of the music. Everything is set equally and I think that is a killer trait that no enough bands harness. “Gravity Is a Relic” is set to a faster pace, but it is still sludge. I love the charging riffing and pounding drumming. I love the quality of these recordings. I love the atmosphere to the tracks adding that element of misanthropy to the overall album.

As for PLEBEIAN GRANDSTAND (Toulouse, France), if the shrapnel-laden assault that was "How Hate Is Hard To Define" had you asking for more, this time around there won't be any survivors left to beg for a rematch. If the explosion of screaming and distortion that is "Woe Is Me" isn't enough, then the hallucinatory "Woe Is You", with its NEUROSIS inspired, trance-like drums, and a throbbing bassline that builds to a crescendo which threatens to tip the richter scale, certainly will be. The first time I heard these tracks, I felt like ripping off my eyelids. And I won't be the one.

PROGRESSIVE-HARDCORE. Doom, metal and crust from former ICOS members. Due to artistic differences and a potential lawsuit over their chosen name, 2009 saw the death of swedens ICOS, a band known for its crushing impassioned resonance. In the years that followed, they took the spirit of their former band and worked at creating a larger, more ominous and ultimately more considered sound. This band would become MONACHUS. Capturing an organic timbre that invokes images of these swedes toiling over beloved instruments, their debut album "out of the blue" draws influence from brooding sludge-metal, yet invokes a sense of timeless peace, surging waves of sung and groaled voices and raucous walls of guitars.
