Brainoil - Death Of This Dry Season

This being my first impression of Brainoil, I have to say that I absolutely loved this filthy sludge right from the beginning of “Death of This Dry Season.” The guitar work is phenomenal, straightforward, bluesy, melodic riffing. The drumming is steady and punishing and I am quickly falling in love with this band. I like that the vocals don’t stand out over the rest of the music. Everything is set equally and I think that is a killer trait that no enough bands harness. “Gravity Is a Relic” is set to a faster pace, but it is still sludge. I love the charging riffing and pounding drumming. I love the quality of these recordings. I love the atmosphere to the tracks adding that element of misanthropy to the overall album.

Smash Detox

HARDCORE. A remarkable cross border collaboration: SMASH DETOX is Ishiya and Souichi (FORWARD), Mukai ( JUDGEMENT), Zac ( WORLD BURNS TO DEATH) Iizawa (TETSU AREI). You'll get 2 powerful songs that take elements of the intense hardcore sounds of each of their classic Japanese and American Hardcore bands, but combined to a new and unique whole. Created with intense focus and effort, this recalls many of the classic Tokyo hardcore-punk 7"s of the late '90s, but also has the unmistakable mark of Texas Powerhouse hardcore.

Resurrectionists Split Lich

HARDCORE/POWER-VIOLENCE. On this nice done split you'll get 6 of the fastest and heaviest songs from RESURRECTIONISTS so far; recorded at the almighty tonmeisterei. On the flipside waiting 11min. of brutal and mean bulldozer style power-violence from LICH (featuring members of BATTLE OF WOLF 359). The record comes in a dark and rough gatefold cover with a screenprint on the frontside.

Bacchus ST

PROGRESSIVE-HARDCORE. Housed in a gorgeously hefty production, the long-awaited debut LP from Irealnd’s BACCHUS is a tense and hulking assault of millenium-era progressive crusty hardcore. With Elements of FROM ASHES RISE and KYLESA forming a raging, spiralling monument of caustic desperation, this is never reductive. Refusing to take the easy option and revelling in a staunchy progressive approach to hardcore, this is like NEUROSIS raised on amphetamine and tempered with weed: excellent.

DEATH BEFORE WORK messageboard punx on a rope + three

HARDCORE. DEATH BEFORE WORK is a fastcore band from Milano, Italy. You'll get fast killer bandana thrash and hardcore in the vein of VOETSEK, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?, LIFE`S HALT and SPAZZ. The 19 tracks are full of fast and furious hardcore. The limited, one-sided LP comes with a golden screen-print on the flipside.

AGATHA goatness

POST-HARDCORE. Italy’s AGATHA are a full-female band formation, once a trio, now a duo. What they create is a slow, sleazy and pounding mixture of punk and sludge-metal with a grooving and taking-no-prisoners heaviness. Distorted bass, drums and extreme vocals (mainly grunts, growls and screams), dissonant rhythms, elements from hardcore, noise, thrash and drone, and a performance lacking of any overdone eccentrism, flirting with straight-forward primitivism and a basically no-nonsense approach. Nothing more than this yet oh so pure and honest. They lost guitar but found satan. Stoner/sludge/posthc like it was raining bloo

Harm's Way - Isolation

HARDCORE. Over the span of three 7"s and a LP, the sound of Chicago's HARMS WAY evolved from power-violence to trash-styled hardcore and on "isolation", the band's 2nd full-length, they throw sludgy elements of EYEHATEGOD into the mix while still delivering breakdown-laden jams people have come to expect

MOLOCH possession

SLUDGE-METAL/HARDCORE. Regarding the music of MOLOCH, it is under the influence of legendary bands like GRIEF, EYEHATEGOD or DYSTOPIA. On "possession" everything is simple, without any musical artifice, but highly effective, and the effect is simply devastating. After listening to these tracks, you feel that a bulldozer just went slowly over you and made you one with the asphalt. MOLOCH brings the heat with super heavy, hateful songs. This is honestly some of the best sludge you've heard in years.

Plebeian Grandstand ÔÇó Bone Dance ÔÇó Divider ÔÇó Three-Way Split

Three bands, three different interpretations of hardcore/punk, two continents, one policy: Destroy.

BONE DANCE (Boise, Idaho, USA) doesn't want to be your friend. The nihilism you'll hear from these self-described "five loud dudes with shitty attitudes", playing their exceedingly raw brand of chaotic hardcore/sludge, will ring a bell whether you're into GAZA or KEN MODE, BOTCH or CURSED. Conceived with a colossal sense of brutality, yet never forsaking their punk ethos, "West" and "Conniver" will further consecrate this band as one to watch. Remember this goddamned name.

No matter how paradoxical it may seem, DIVIDER (Long Island, New York, USA) would prefer to unite rather than to divide. Uniting the sound of more modern filthy hardcore bands with a strong sense of punk emergency, these two tracks ("Gaia" & "Halios Geron" ) introduce Chris Tzompanakis behind the mic, best known for his work with the influential group SKYCAMEFALLING in the early 2000's. If you're into DEADGUY, THE POWER AND THE GLORY, or VISION OF DISORDER, you've found the perfect soundtrack for your next bare-knuckle boxing match.

As for PLEBEIAN GRANDSTAND (Toulouse, France), if the shrapnel-laden assault that was "How Hate Is Hard To Define" had you asking for more, this time around there won't be any survivors left to beg for a rematch. If the explosion of screaming and distortion that is "Woe Is Me" isn't enough, then the hallucinatory "Woe Is You", with its NEUROSIS inspired, trance-like drums, and a throbbing bassline that builds to a crescendo which threatens to tip the richter scale, certainly will be. The first time I heard these tracks, I felt like ripping off my eyelids. And I won't be the one.

HELLHORSE decade of dust

HARDCORE. Callusing and fast metal fused with d-beat hardcore, Tucson's HELLHORSE is a unique blend of precision and raw aggression. Lyrically, "decade of sust" paints a bleak and mysterious picture, as much for fans of CELTIC FROST as it is for those of CATHARSIS, RINGWORM and GEHENNA. Members of BLACK TEETH and CONDEMNED.

HARDCORE-PUNK. FERAL BABIES is a hardcore-punk band from Florida. Music is raw, angry and fast but maintains a catchy and melodic vibe to it. Reminiscent of first generation California hardcore acts like CIRCLE JERKS, ANGRY SAMOANS and JODY FOSTER ARMY. Professionally made tapes.

ALASKAN adversity; woe

POST-HARDCORE/METAL. ALASKAN is an atmospheric post-metal band from Ottawa, Canada. "adversity; woe" is their 2nd full-length. ALASKAN established their musical base in "the weak and the wounded" and now with "adversity; woe" they fortified it. This is a major characteristic of a band that gallops to the top with no napoleonic ambitions but by creating a great characteristic personal sound that in the future some bands will "sound like ALASKAN". The artificially stringed instruments still remain heavy as a bulldozer with huge riffs that can drive you mad. The naturally stringed instruments give life to the band’s compositions following the same brutality of their previous release with a little bit more screaming elements.

DEPHOSPHORUS axiom

PROGRESSIVE-HARDCORE/METAL. DEPHOSPHORUS formed in Greece back in 2008 and "axiom" is their 1st vinyl output. Included are 7 songs of what the band has dubbed astrogrind, which is absolutely raging, top-notch grindcore that fluidly blends in elements of black-metal and crust. Imagine CATHARSIS practicing in the room next to BURST. If you stood outside and both bands practicing at the same time, the listenable elements of that recording would probably sound pretty damn close to DEPHOSPHORUS. Expect loads of blasting speed; intense tremolo picking; surging midpaced rhythms; awesome fits of dark, winding dissonance; and occasional bouts of weird, spacey effects. LP comes in a nice gatefold cover.

BIRUSHANAH SPLIT DRAIN THE SKY

PROGRESSIVE-HARDCORE/METAL. BIRUSHANAH is an experimental sludge-metal and hardcore band from Osaka, Japan. As well as traditional Japanese music - which is a notable aspect of their sound the band cites NEUROSIS, SWANS, ZENI GEVA, and CORRUPTED (whom bassist Sougyo previously performed with) as influences. DRAIN THE SKY from California consists former members of DIMLAIA and HIS HERO IS GONE. They're collaborate to create visceral, atmospheric, threatening music that seeks to collapse (musical and other) boundaries.

I EXIST II: the broken passage

HARDCORE. Australia's I EXIST have returned to lay waste once again with their 2nd offering of hardcore and doom in "II: the broken passage". Let’s face it, mashups and crossovers can be a trainwreck when it's halfarsed. On "II: the broken passage" I EXIST do it well and set a standard that a lot of bands won't reach on their best day. If you like stoner/doom, it would be hard to ignore. If you like old-hardcore before it was shaken up and became a trend, this album will keep you happy. For fans of THE CURSED, HIGH ON FIRE and Cleveland stuff.

BLACKWAVES 0140

INSTRUMENTAL/POST-ROCK/DOOM. Heavy, monolithic instrumental post-rock meets the unfriendly atmosphere of the early SWITCHBLADE and CULT OF LUNA recordings. Dark riffing and spooky organ-vibes team up with a massive bass and drum work. Heavy and excellent produced (Tonmeisterei), with enough room to give every musician his own special place. Some songs are more rocking; think of DOOMRIDERS meets PELICAN, and some songs carry a slight '70s doom and even okkult-spirit. You guys read this over and over, but the 2nd BLCKWVS full-length will be a massive step forward. LP comes with a an eyecatching 350gr thick die-cut cover plus a screenprinted front and a big foldout inlay, black innersleeve.
